THE ALFRED / UPSTAIRS – Hotel Bar and Restaurant
I recently did the branding for The Alfred and Upstairs, the restaurant and bar for the Kimberly Hotel in NYC. I created this single business card to work for both venues. I used the ornate designs hidden on the US one dollar bill as inspiration for the drawings and made a custom wallpaper (shown on the inside of the card) from them. Its always tricky to house two businesses on one card but I used it to my advantage in this case.
MAISON PREMIERE
Maison Premier is a new oyster and absinthe house reflective of old hotel lobbies, and oyster houses from the 1890′s in New York, Paris and New Orleans. We branded Maison Premiere completely, starting with the logo and meticulously designing everything down to the “CPR kit located under the bar” sign. Every font, every graphic, every color is true to the era and handmade by either myself or my team. We hand drew fonts, old coins, frames, and just about everything. The guys at MP were fantastic as they totally understood the power of solid and complete branding so we had the opportunity to design just about everything you can imagine. CLICK HERE to check out the website we did — the smooth transitions and sweet little map are my favorite parts. Or click the image above and see the business cards, menus, postcards, etc. I’m an absolute nut about fine food so as you can imagine if I eat one more oyster I think i’m going to grow a shell but you should not miss an opportunity to eat here. It’s a treasure.
TEMPELHOF BROADCAST
This project is really beyond my wildest dreams- it is a public art project/musical composition involving 600 musicians. I designed a logo, identity system, website, advertising and poster for “Tempelhof Broadcast.” I also art directed a very cool motion graphic animation and movie titles for the short film on the site and there are many more pieces to come. Click here to check out the site we just launched and see the little movie or the image above to see the poster and some web pages. You’ll want to read more about this project –I promise. Lisa Bielawa is an absolute genius so Im pretty proud to be working on this.
“Tempelhof Broadcast” brings together hundreds of musicians in a large-scale spatial acoustic musical celebration in and about Tempelhofer Park in Berlin, composed by American composer Lisa Bielawa. The 60-minute piece will be composed expressly for performance on the tarmac of the former Tempelhof Airport.
VENTES PRIVÉES
I just created this logo and identity system for Ventes Privées. VP is the super luxe division of De Beers diamonds. They sell very very rare gems to a super chic clientele. This was a really exciting project as it was really fun to create a modern diamond graphic. The website will be launching so, so in the meantime check out some of the pages and the identity system.
Le Barricou
Here is a new project that is currently in progress. Tim Saputo, who designs with me quite often, and I are creating and entirely new brand identity for this Williamsburg restaurant. We are in the process of doing a whole new identity package as well as a menu system, coasters. matchbooks (my fave- I have a huge collection of them). Here is a sneak peek. CHECK OUT how fun the kids menu is, there is a little “hidden” french elf!
BARBER SHOP
You may already know how much I love having a brand new tight haircut, so it will not be a surprise to see the new cards and logo I did for my favorite barber shop. Mike and Danny at East 6th Street Barbers are by far the best and coolest barbers in Manhattan and believe me I’ve been to every shop in town. Not only are they meticulous barbers but they are a total blast to talk to. The only downside to doing this job is that now I can’t bust their chops about their lousy graphics every Friday at my standing appointment – I’ll just have to say how awesome everything looks. Shucks.
DuMont matchbooks
I have a pretty large collection of matchbooks, so I was really excited to create yet another matchbook design for DuMont in Brooklyn.
S.S. NORMANDIE
These are some of the design materials that went along with the new exhibit: DECODENCE / Legendary Interiors and Illustrious Travelers Aboard The S.S. Normandie, which I did exhibition design for as well with Sandra Hirshkowitz, for the Seaport Museum. I did everything from a capsule website for the exhibit to advertising and custom wallpaper for our partners Lalique and Jeremy Scott. Take a look at this snapshot of the varied graphics created.
Fidencio Mezcal Package Design, Logo, Website + Identity
Along with the complete package, bottle and label design I also did the logo, identity and website for Fidencio Mezcal’s new Joven Mezcal. Check out their site and buy a bottle! New York Magazine listed it as one of their top 20 Christmas gifts for 2009.
Argosy Designs
Branding and Identity Design for a Metalsmith and master-craftsman in Brooklyn.
This identity design was created for Erik Johnson at Argosy. He is an absolute master craftsman, metal smith and designer.Plus his work shop is super tidy, as far as metalshops go, which always makes my heart flutter. Visit Erik at Argosy Designs.
Jungle
This identity was designed for Amanda Mitchell at Jungle. She does garden and floral design. They have an amazing collection of furniture and odd and ends that all look like they came straight from the Cabinet of Natural Curiosities. This card is a platinum foil on rubberized paper. Looks good – feels good. The other side is black on black ants / gloss on matte, which you cant see. But let me show it to you in person.
DuMont
I worked with Jesse Goldman to create this logo and identity package for DuMont restaurant in Brooklyn. This place is truly the place to hang out in Brooklyn. The paper I used for the business card is a rubberized paper and feels even better than it looks! Stop by DuMont and ask to feel a business card.
Dressler Restaurant
I drew these organic forms for the owners of Dressler to highlight the amazing antique moldings and tin ceiling that exist in this beautiful space. The food here is really great. Try the fish!
MATA
I have been working with MATA for close to 15 years and have done everything from their logo to their website. Founded in 1996 by Philip Glass, Eleonor Sandresky, and Lisa Bielawa, MATA presents pieces by young composers during a week-long festival, held each spring in New York City.
Jack’s Brook
Jack’s Brook is a poetry press that prints really beautiful small run books. I just did a single poem in a limited edition run for Edward Field on the most ridiculously amazing paper (Eames Canvas Print) and am working on the Jack’s Brook website and identity design. I’m shooting everything now so check back soon…
